Lucky Draws

Non-Handicapped Golfer Lucky Draw

It has come to our attention that some clubs battle to fill the draw in their annual Club Competitions. This year we are offering clubs the opportunity to run a separate competition, for non-handicapped golfers, in the open slots in their draw. The winners (leading man and woman) the Club can enter into a national Lucky Draw.

The prize: Sanlam Cancer Challenge Gift

Sanlam Cancer Challenge Initiatives

Much-needed funds are raised by the Sanlam Cancer Challenge to assist CANSA with its valuable services, which include patient facilitation, a toll-free information line, counselling, day-care centres, interim homes and volunteer services.

In 2018 we helped raise a total of R4.3 million - the most successful year since the annual tournament began in 1993. This year we aim to reach R5 million, which will be used by CANSA to fund its unique integrated service that involves research, education and support.

CANSA spends approximately R12 million each year on valuable research.

More than R600 000 is contributed towards research projects in terms of environmental carcinogen (cancer-causing substances) to enable the public to make the right choices. The rest of the funding is used for the following:

  • Support to more than 31 research projects at universities
  • Grant bursaries to post-graduate students
  • Help fund research initiatives

Apart from its health awareness campaigns, CANSA reaches remote areas in South Africa through its Mobile Health Clinics to provide screening and early detection programmes. This includes:

  • Clinical breast examinations
  • SureTouch - screening for breast cancer pap smears
  • Screening test for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests - a finger-prick blood test to help detect prostate abnormalities
  • FotoFinder screening - mole mapping dermoscope devices for detecting skin cancer
  • Colorectal cancer screening - testing for occult (concealed) blood in stool

The five health awareness campaigns that are actively driven by CANSA are:

  • Balanced Lifestyle
  • SunSmart
  • No-Tobacco
  • Women’s & Men’s Health, as well as Children & Youth Health
  • Environment

CANSA offers care and support through numerous mediums and initiatives.

Q: I'm a senior golfer handicapped from the forward tees. What is my official handicap if I play from the club tees?
A: The Sanlam Cancer Challenge Conditions of Competition (which can be downloaded from www.sanlamcancerchallenge.co.za) state two things relevant to the answer to this question:
1. You need to play from your official handicap in accordance with the criteria laid down SAGA Handicapping System (see condition 3.5); and
2. All players in the Mens competition must play from the same tee (see condition 2.3).

So if a senior golfer, whose handicapped off the forward tees, has an official handicap of 18, for example, and plays in his club competition from the club tees then his handicap will be adjusted as outlined in the SA Golf Handicap Manual point 11(which is available on www.handicaps.co.za) as follows: assuming the course par for the forward tees is 72 with an SR of 70.
